When your old boiler needs replacing, get it done right — Gas Safe registered, 15 years experience, no hidden fees
Not every fault means you need a new boiler — sometimes a repair is the right call. But there are situations where replacement is the more sensible option, and it helps to know the difference before spending money on a fix that won't last.
Modern boilers have efficiencies of 90%+ (A-rated). A boiler over 12 years old is likely running at 70–80% at best. The cost saved on bills can offset a replacement within a few years — before factoring in repair costs.
One repair can be unlucky. Two or three in the space of a year is a pattern. When the same boiler keeps failing, parts are typically wearing out across the board — you're likely to spend more on reactive repairs than a replacement would cost.
As boilers age they lose efficiency — the combustion process becomes less effective, heat exchangers scale up, and the system works harder to deliver the same output. Higher bills with the same usage is a reliable indicator that efficiency has dropped.
If radiators take a long time to heat up, hot water runs lukewarm, or the system cycles on and off erratically, these can all point to a boiler that's no longer performing properly — sometimes fixable, sometimes a sign the unit is past its best.
Manufacturers typically support parts for 10 years after a model is discontinued. If a boiler is old enough that parts are on extended lead times or no longer stocked, a repair becomes impractical even if the fault is minor.
If you're unsure whether your boiler is worth repairing, I'll always give you an honest assessment — and I'll tell you if a repair is the better option.

From your first call to a warm house — here's what to expect.
I visit the property to assess your existing system — boiler location, flue route, pipework, radiators, and hot water demand. This lets me recommend the right boiler for your home rather than a one-size-fits-all option.
You receive a clear, fixed-price written quote covering all labour, materials, and the boiler itself. No day rates, no vague estimates, no surprises on the invoice.
We agree a date that works for you. For most straightforward replacements I can usually schedule within a few days of accepting the quote.
The old unit is removed and disposed of responsibly. The new boiler is installed, the flue fitted, and all pipework connected. I work tidily and leave the property clean at the end of each day.
The system is filled, pressurised, and fully commissioned. I run through the controls with you so you know how to operate your new boiler and thermostat correctly.
Gas boiler installations are notifiable under Building Regulations. I handle this on your behalf as a Competent Person. The manufacturer warranty is registered the same day, and you receive a completed Benchmark commissioning document for your records.
Every boiler replacement includes the following as standard. The only potential additions are longer or non-standard flue runs, magnetic system filters, or additional pipework alterations — all quoted in advance if applicable.
Also installing system boilers for properties with higher hot water demand or multiple bathrooms. See the combi boiler installation page for information on new-fit installations.

"Nicholas is a true professional. He has completed a couple of jobs for me where previous engineers had given an incorrect diagnosis or said they could not fix the issue. He is very knowledgeable, clearly knows his trade, and I'm glad I found him to resolve my problems."
A straightforward like-for-like replacement typically takes one day. If you're switching from a conventional or system setup to a combi — which involves removing the cylinder and cold water tank — allow two to five days depending on the complexity of the pipework.
Yes — I remove and dispose of the old boiler and any associated parts as part of the installation. The job is left clean and tidy.
Manufacturer warranties vary by brand and model — typically two to ten years. As a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer and Vaillant Accredited Installer I can offer extended warranties at the top end of that range. All warranties are registered with the manufacturer on the day of installation.
It depends on the age and condition of your boiler. If it's under 10 years old and the repair cost is modest, a repair usually makes sense. If it's over 12–15 years old, breaking down repeatedly, or the repair quote is more than a third of a replacement cost, a new boiler is almost always better value long term. I'll always give you an honest assessment.
