Bought a new cooker or hob? By law, gas appliances must be connected by a Gas Safe registered engineer. I'll fit it safely, test it properly, and leave it ready to cook on.
Why a Gas Safe engineer has to connect it
It is illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered to install or work on a gas appliance — and that includes connecting a cooker or hob you've bought online or from a showroom. Retailers will usually deliver the appliance to your kitchen, but they won't connect it to the gas supply. That last step is where I come in.
It's not red tape for the sake of it. A poorly made gas connection risks leaks and carbon monoxide, and an appliance that hasn't been checked can burn incorrectly without anyone noticing. A proper installation includes testing the connection and the appliance itself, so you know it's safe before the first meal goes on.
One thing worth knowing about built-in hobs: they're hard-piped rather than connected with a flexible hose, and they often need minor pipework alterations under the worktop to line everything up. That's fine — it's a normal part of the job. And if you're moving house or replacing an appliance, I handle disconnections too: the old appliance is disconnected safely and the supply capped off.
What an installation involves

- ✓ Connect to the gas supply — flexible hose with bayonet fitting for freestanding cookers, rigid connection for built-in hobs
- ✓ Fit the safety chain / stability bracket on freestanding cookers
- ✓ Gas tightness test on the installation
- ✓ Check burners, flame picture and safety devices (flame supervision)
- ✓ Check ventilation is adequate for the room

What to have ready
Second-hand or inherited appliance? It can still be fitted, but it must pass the same safety checks as a new one — and if it isn't safe, I'll tell you straight rather than connect something that shouldn't be used.

Everything is tested before I leave, you're shown the appliance working, and the connection is left safe and compliant. No loose ends — just a cooker that's ready to use.

A straightforward freestanding cooker swap onto an existing gas point is usually about an hour, including testing. Built-in hobs, or jobs where pipework needs altering or extending, take longer — I'll give you a realistic idea when you book.
I'll always disconnect and cap the old appliance safely as part of the job. Disposal can usually be arranged too — just mention it when booking so I can plan for it.
